London Age Group Regional Championships 2017
Over the past 2 weekends, 12 Hackney Aquatics swimmers competed in the region’s biggest competition, the Regional Championships for swimmers aged 11-14. Building on the success of the Youth Championships at the start of the month, Hackney swimmers came away with 4 medals, 18 finals and a huge amount of personal best times.
The first weekend saw swimmers competing at the London Aquatics Centre where the 2012 Olympic Games took place. Kai Ogden (14) coming back from a broken wrist came away with a SILVER medal in the 200 back in a new PB of 2:21.6 which now ranks him in the top 20 in country in the national qualifying window. Kai also swam in finals in the 100 back and 200 IM in a time that also ranks him in the top 20 in the country. Kai had a good meet with PBS in all his events, including the 400 IM (finished 6th), 200 breast, 50 free and 50 back having had only 4 weeks back in full training.
Ryan McCoy (14) also got SILVER in the 200 fly with a PB of 2:20.1 which now ranks him 10th in country in the national qualifying window. Ryan also swam to BRONZE in a tight final of the 100 fly and new PB of 1:01.9 which ranks him in the top 10 in the qualifying window. He also PBd and finaled in the 200 back and 50 back, 100 back and was on his PB in the final of the 100 free and 50 fly. He also finished 5th in the 400 free.
In the second weekend at Crystal Palace Jude Costley (14) rounded off the medals swimming to SILVER and a 3 second PB in the 100 back with 1.04.7 which also ranks him in the top 20 in the country. He also made the 50 back final just missing the medals coming 4th in 30.4 just 0.03 off silver. Jude also finaled in the 200 back.
Across the weekend there was also finals for Ilyas Ahmed (200 and 100 fly) and Tahlia Deaner (200 back) who were competing in their first Regional Championships, Kevin Agudelo Lopez (200 fly) and 11 year old Mika Ogden (50 fly) who was one of the only 11 year olds to swim in the 11/12 year old finals.
There were also PBs for other first time Regional Qualifiers Ley Ito, Margot Celestine and Thomas Archer.
