Hackney Aquatics at Winter Nationals 2018
Winter Nationals Report – 14-16th December 2018
This weekend saw 5 Hackney Aquatics Swimmers competing at the Winter National Short Course Championships in Sheffield – the first time the club has ever had any swimmers at the meet.
Jude Costley (15), Ilyas Ahmed (15), Ryan McCoy (15), Kai Ogden (15) and Dubai based Max Tambling (18) swam all 3 days in Sheffield over a range of events including 3 relays.
After a long weekend of racing, the Hackney team of Ryan, Ilyas, Jude and Max produced an incredible performance in the 4x100 free and qualified for the Senior Final competing against teams such as Loughborough and Plymouth. The boys all swam PBs and stepped up again in the final to finish 9th.
Jude Costley competed in the 50 and 100 back finishing both swims in big PBs – the 50 he swam 27.60 and the 100 in 59.60 making his goals of swimming under 28 and 60 respectively. He also swam under PBs in the 4x100 free relay ((54.64) and 4x50 medley relay (27.64 Bk).
Ryan McCoy swam in the 200 Fly, taking it out in his fastest 100 split but unfortunately feeling the effects on the last 50 to finish just outside his PB. Ryan made up for it though in the relays swimming a massive PB of 53.79 lead off leg (and 53.79 from a rolling start in the final) of the 4x100. He also swam faster than his PB in both of the 4x50 relays (25.0 free)
Kai Ogden despite feeling ill for the weekend swam on his PBs in the 200 IM and 100 IM. He was just outside in the 200 back and after a gutsy 400 IM he had to pull out of the 200 Breast and relay on the last day through illness. Kai swam under PBs though in the medley (32.10 Breast) and 4x50 free relay (24.86).
In his first ever National Championships, Ilyas Ahmed swam just outside his 200 Back PB however made a huge best time in the 4x100 free relay in 56.26. He also swam on his best in the medley relay (28.18 Fly).
Max Tambling who swims in Dubai swam 3 events – the 200 and 400 free and 200 fly with some really well executed races and fast times. Max also swam 2 of the relays.
Overall the weekend was a great experience for the Hackney team and they have learnt a lot. The swimmers will now focus their attention to qualifying for the Summer National Champs in July and the British Champs in April.
